Call !!

“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (James 5:14-15)”

About 1994, a young married couple walked up to me right after Church services was over and they handed me an envelope. They then proceeded to hand out envelopes to the Pastor and two other of the Elders in our Church.

As they left the building, we each opened our envelopes and there was an invitation to come to their home for coffee and cake. They had a matter that they would like to discuss with us.

We each arrived at their home at the designated date and time, where they proudly showed us their home. We were guided to the front room and they served us coffee and cake, and they talked about how they were new to our Church and they enjoyed it very much.

After a small amount of time, they then started telling us why they had called us together in their home. They spoke about how they had been married for about five years and that they had a desired to have children, but after seeking medical advice, they found that neither of them was capable of having children. Doctors had given them both no hope of ever being capable of ever having children, even with medical help.

They were crushed by the reports, because they felt God had placed it in their hearts, that they would have children. They started to seek adoption as a way to fill their want of children, but always in prayer, they felt the Lord say “No”, that they would have children of their own.

They both had heard several times in our Church, how people are to call for the elders and that’s what they felt the Lord was saying to them; so being faithful and obedient to the scriptures, they were calling for the elders to pray.

I’ve been in Church for over 30 years and this was the first and only time I’ve ever seen someone actually call for the elders. I been at Church where we opened it up for people to come up for prayer, (where we did the calling, not the people.) So to actually have someone call for the elders was somewhat a surprise; and we were more than ready to pray for them.

We anointed with oil and place our hands on them and we “prayed the prayer of faith” over them. The room almost felt electrified as we prayed. Just as soon as we finished praying, I felt in my heart God was going to answer their request. I was just about to speak those words, when our Pastor began to speak. He said, the Lord heard their hearts and their faith, that within one year they would be holding their child.

We each felt that the Lord was truly speaking through the Pastor, so we gave thanks to the Lord and his ability to perform it. They thanked us for coming and praying with them.

Almost four months later, the couple came before the whole Church to give testimony that they were pregnant with child. When they asked the doctor, (who was surprised, because he was one of the doctors who told them, they weren’t capable of having children), they asked how far along she was? When he told them; they realized she got pregnant just a few days after they called for us to pray for them.

A little over nine months after we prayed for them, they came before the Church holding a baby girl and they gave the Lord thanks for his faithfulness to fulfill his word, (his scriptures and the prophecy that they received that day they called for the elders.)

The couple departed our Church to take a job opportunity in another city. However, we received word that they had another child. Not bad for someone who was told that neither one of them was capable of having children.

All because, they believed and they called!
